The Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir

Vladimir is located 180 kilometers to the east of the Russian capital and has a population of 346 thousand people. Founded in 990 the city was the capital of the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal. In 1108 the prince Vladimir Monomakh transferred the seat of the Russian Grand Princes from Kiev to Vladimir. For four centuries Vladimir had remained the main city and religious center of Russia before the capital was moved to Moscow. During this period on three occasions Vladimir was devastated by the troops of the Golden Horde. However, the most important monuments have survived, including the Assumption Cathedral, the Golden Gate, the Cathedral of Saint Demetrius, the castle of Bogolioubovo and the Church of the Intercession. These twelfth century monuments are listed on the World Heritage List. Vladimir and Suzdal are part of the Golden Ring, the famous tourist route going through ancient princely cities.
